Vulcan Semiconductor Diffusion Heater
High-temperature diffusion furnace heater, to 1,350°C
The Vulcan is DS Fibertech’s high-temperature diffusion furnace heater, rated to 1,350°C. It uses large-gauge Kanthal APM element wire, held by high-strength interlocking ceramic separators, with built-in reinforcements that stop the element sagging where one heating zone meets the next. The end vestibules are made to resist cracking and shrinking under stress.
Construction
DS Fibertech’s cross-section, from the process tube outwards: a 1,800°C alumina coating on the hot face, which stops the fibre shedding dust; alumina interlocking spacers and the helical element, set in DS Fibertech’s own vacuum-formed ceramic fibre; cold-face layers and an insulation blanket; and a stainless steel shell, with Kanthal leads passing through lead isolators.

Choosing a design
The Vulcan is for furnaces run at the top of the temperature range. The Hercules is the high-temperature design in Kanthal A1, to 1,300°C.
